The teaching of work health disease relation at medical school: students' perception and an improvement purpose at UFMG

No matter the specialty or placement in the health system, all doctors are expected to have the ability to deal with the work-health-disease relation, although this subject hasn't been properly taught in medical schools. Seeking to improve medical education in this sense, the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Minas Gerais developed a program for evaluating the discipline "occupational health", focused on pedagogical strategies and on instruments for evaluation of the students. The project was implemented in several stages. The first was a review of history and literature focusing the concepts and evaluation strategies applied to medical education as well as identification of similar experiences in other schools. Later, questionnaires were prepared for evaluating the students' perception of this discipline and previous experiences. They were named pre and post-tests. The tests are applied systematically in the beginning and in the end of each semester since the second semester of 2003. The results of these tests allowed a better adjustment of contents and methodology, of utmost importance for a curricular reorientation of medical education.
