Ethical Issues in the Use of Animals in the Teaching-Learning Process at schools of Medicine in Rio de Janeiro and Niterói, Brazil.

Abstract:

The aim of the present study was to investigate the use of animals and alternatives in medical education, as well as teachers´ attitudes towards use of animals for teaching purposes. Sean medical schools in Rio de Janeiro and Niterói were identified to survey use of animals in teaching activities. A standardized interview on the subject was used as the research instrument. Results indicated that four of the seven institutions used animals in courses, and the data also showed variations from one course to another. The animals most frequently used were mice, and videotapes were frequently mentioned as alternatives. Most respondents were unaware of legislation related to use of animals and reported not believing in the discontinuation of such practice. Conclusions indicated the need to broaden the discussion on applied ethics in the use of animals during medical training.
