Disenchanted Modernity, the Crisis in Medicine, and Institutional Imagination

Abstract:

lt is possible to locate the profound connection between medical knowledge and the modem model and rules of modem science, which, by establishing a split between reason and subject, leads to a science which has the "pathological” body as its main object of study, thereby imprisoning medical science within a paradigm of simplification. The author analyzes both the crisis of modernity and that of medicine and medical education from the perspective of tire negativism arising from the dissociation between rationality and subjectivity. Breaking with the paradigm of simplification is suppested as a possible way to create a new model for medical education - a Medicine of Complexity The author contends that only by way of profound changes by which Education is seen as·a “school giving birth to subjects”. will it be possible to supplant organic medicine and bring about a new concept of modern education which - despite its limitations - takes part in giving rise to a new man and a new humankind.
