Culturalism and Conceptual Reappropriation, the Inevitable Paradox of ISTA

Abstract:

The article looks at the dual movement of ISTA and European cultural institutions which, in the 1970s, have introduced Asian performing arts to Euro-American performers. In the countries of origin, transmission took place over a long period of time by imitating the elderly. The masters (called guru) did not always try to explicit verbally their tacit knowledge. In technical demonstrations for Western audiences and short-term apprenticeships for European students, teachers have changed the learning process: they have added verbal instructions in a language that is not theirs. By translating and transmitting their tacit know-how, do performers transform their practice?
