This work aims to promote a reflection about some aspects of the teaching and learning process of Chemistry developed in a high school of the Brazilian Northeast. For this, a field study was conducted through the application of questionnaires to teachers and students of this school. The results of the analyses of responses to the questions revealed some aspects of this process that deserve a deep reflection. The enjoyment of students to study the content of the discipline depends crucially on the performance and confidence of the teacher when he/she explores the contents in their classes. The differentiated and non-traditional methodologies of teaching can offer better instruments of encouragement and motivation to the learning of Chemistry. The inadequate initial and continuing training of teachers continue to be a major barrier to the improvement of our education. Finally, it is highlighted the deficiency that students show in relation to the knowledge explored in other disciplines, such as Portuguese
