From Legal Southeast Amazon to the Central North: spatial transformation of the economy

Abstract

This paper analyzes the economic transformation of the Central North Region, with specific reference to the area known as Amazônia Legal. It is assumed that a region changes its spatial configuration stemming from an economic base. This course of action is based on the historical path of the described region and, thereafter on determination of the locational quotient (LQ) observing the performance of economic activities between 2000 and 2010. Results have demonstrated that the Southeast region of Amazônia Legal has figured as an agribusiness production (RPA) and, therefore, disconnected from the Amazon context, which therefore led to the Central North Region. These results are based on the LQ, which indicate a rise in primary activities in the examined municipalities, whereas other production processes were more concentrated into the same period.
