The field and the transformative praxis of Planning: reflections for a brazilian agenda

Abstract

The objective of the article is to analyze, based on Bourdieu’s concepts of the field, habitus and capital, how restructuring processes in the economy, in politics and society itself have generated a number of challenges and opportunities for the formation and professional practice of Brazilian spatial planning. We argue that changes in the post-1970 period have generated new skills and abilities for planning that have crossed the boundaries of traditional formation. At the same time, it may be observed that the Brazilian set of institutions, responsible for formation and professional practice, is still relatively disconnected, and with a limited scope to absorb the new demands faced by planning within the country. We briefly discuss an ongoing experience within the Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC) regarding an interdisciplinary bachelor’s degree in territorial planning created on the basis of its graduate program in territorial planning and management. The paper concludes with a reflection on the need to set up a national agenda structured around this theme.
