Capitalist urban planning: notes for a critical reflection on the social production of space

Abstract

For a long time, urban planning has been considered a cornerstone for the organized development of cities throughout the world. Its importance, expressed in terms of order, has allowed us to legitimize its action in urban activity to the point that without it, a city would hardly be conceived. However, the logic of planning a city, built under the aegis of accumulation and surplus production in order to maintain a capitalist production of space through a false consciousness of reality (ideology), has enabled social legitimization of a constant reproduction of capital from urbanization, without considering the collateral damage that this process brings to the activity. Therefore, urban planning is presented as an indispensable, strategic mechanism for the constitution of a capitalist mode of reproduction, which is derived from a constant plan of spatial intervention in the city (order).
