Differential space projection based on urban rehabilitation and social participation: the case of a cultural center and a green area (La Redonda and Parque Federal), in Santa Fe, Argentina

Abstract

The rehabilitation becomes relevant since it brings back value to areas in decay, such as railroad sectors, providing them with new structures and functions. Culture arises as a strategic factor for the rehabilitation of the urban image. The social production of space, as a historical sequence, is contradictory and intermingles different spatial practices, symbolic representations and a social imaginary. An analysis of the representations and actions developed by the actors involved during the recovery of La Redonda and Parque Federal in the city of Santa Fe (by means of their discourses, regulations and programs), allows to describe the types of appropriations, spatial symbolisms and social urban identity implied. By considering the everyday life of the neighborhood, their children and of the railroad labor as central concepts, a production of a differential space is analyzed from the basis of partner management between citizens, self-organized neighbors, public powers and private agents.
