Innovation, development and urban space: a necessary but not enough relationship

Abstract

The specialised literature is almost unanimous regarding the close relationship between innovation, development and urban space, from the classic theoretical approaches to the contemporaneous ones. Several approaches consider a lot of fundamental factors in order to develop the innovation process. The main instigative question is the following: all of these approaches have contributed to effective civilizational advances or are we far behind the positive cause-effect relationship between innovation, development and urban space? This question is justified by the fact that several divergences and dysfunctionalities can occur in the urban-rural environment. That means that we have at the same time a creative city, technologically speaking, and an unequal city which is very poor from the civilizational point of view. For the purpose of this apparent paradox, this paper deals with a more intelligent, inclusive and eclectic development process, a more suitable and responsible pattern for citizenship.
