ABSTRACT
Portuguese colonialism in Mozambique was characterized by the exploitation of Mozambicans, who were denied civil and political rights, and of the country’s natural resources. When Caetano became President of the Government of Portugal and Overseas in 1968, he introduced some cosmetic changes, such as the creation of the newspaper Ressurgimento, in which prisoners were forced to profess repentance and patriotism. Written by political prisoners, the paper aimed to reach the Mozambican population of the districts most affected by the “subversion”, the foreign public opinion, particularly from the countries surrounding Mozambique, and finally the FRELIMO headquarters in Dar es Salaam. This study aims to analyze the content of the newspaper, considering it a historical document and a propaganda instrument of the colonial system, as well as to investigate its role as a document, which is open to a multiplicity of readings that can go beyond the colonial context.
