O "dia de São Bartolomeu" e o "carnaval sem fim": o quebra-quebra de ônibus e bondes na cidade de São Paulo em agosto de 1947

This article aims to analyze the bus and streetcar rampage that took place in São Paulo City, in August 1st, 1947. The end of the war and the fall of the Estado Novo form a new political and social scenario in Brazil, in which the popular aspirations strongly appeared. Thus, the discussions about redemocratization, from the point of view of the popular classes, were deeply related to the conquest of public services such as garbage collecting, mailing services, public health centers, etc. However, these demands lead to the problem of urban transportation. Consequently, the issue of circulating around the city, as well as satisfying the popular demands, depended on the regular and efficient provision of transportation services. In this context, the increase of the transportation fares set off a huge popular attack against buses and streetcars.
