The Protagonists of Education: University Students in the Canary Islands, 1913-1927

ABSTRACT

The objective of this article is to analyze the significant features of the students of the University Section of the Canary Islands (1913-1927) through the documents of the academic institution. In the context of the time, the establishment of higher education in the Canary Islands (Spain) was complicated. The aspirations of the island elites to have university studies, after various efforts with the intermediation of politicians, journalists, and professors of the high school institute, were achieved in 1913, although they were dependent on the University of Seville. We use the methodology of historical analysis resorting to primary and secondary sources. This research contributes to revealing the singularities of the students in the implantation of university studies in the Canary Islands and enriches the microhistory, while at the same time providing a little-exploited line of research that can be extrapolated to other geographical settings.
