Ibero-American Independences on Debate: Reflections on Revolutions and Liberalisms in the 1820s

ABSTRACT

The Ibero-American independences have provoked important historiographical debates that have shown the importance of the revolutionary transformations that took place between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. The idea is to show that, in the 1820s, the revolutionary elements of nineteenth-century liberalism that formed the independent republics were implemented in almost all the Ibero-American territories. Thus, I am based on the concept of revolution to define the processes of independence in Ibero-America, highlighting that this occurred from the assumptions of liberalism. In this way, this reflection allows us to broaden our perspective and obtain a generalization about the processes of independence. With this, I show that the result of the processes of independence cannot be limited to the adoption of the republic as a form of government. The analysis, necessarily historical, must transcend towards the global understanding of these phenomena.
