Through the analysis of documents from the archives of the Children's Social Service Department of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, the present study aims to establish a relationship between the punishment practices in correction institutions of SESME, from 1945-1964, and the existence of a medical, juridical, philosophical and pedagogical knowledge which considered discipline a strategy to reclaim minors, neglected or delinquent, under the States's custody.
