ABSTRACT
This article analyzes the problem of infant mortality in Santiago de Chile during the Popular Unity government, between 1970 and 1973, focusing on: infants living environment, main food problems and diseases, characterizing the critical points of the time, increased a lot in: malnutrition, lack of urban infrastructure and hospital crisis. The study is based on the following historical records: press, medical publications and Statistical Yearbook of the Republic of Chile. This documentary base allows us to understand the projects developed by the Popular Unity government, the implementation of plans and the role of communities in child health. The conclusions distinguish: reduction in mortality figures; sanitary improvements; progress in the prevention of childhood diseases. As a backdrop, the deep political polarization that led to the institutional breakdown.
