This article highlights cassava or manioc flour as the main work activity and food reference for rural workers in the administrative area of Paranaguá during the second half of the 19th century. From the analysis of a corpus of inventories post-mortem of the period 1849-1887, it is possible to affirm and describe a rural way of life which was almost entirely devoted to the cultivation of cassava flour.
