The Peasants of the Backlands of Rio de Janeiro: The Black and Mestizo Peasant Community of Vargem Grande

ABSTRACT

This article aims to understand and analyze the process of construction and development of the Community of Black and Mestizo Farmers of Vargem Grande throughout the nineteenth century and early twentieth century, which gave rise to the creation of the Quilombola Remnant Community Cafundá Astrogilda, in the west of the city of Rio de Janeiro. We are also interested in understanding how this process was affected by the socioeconomic transformations that occurred in Brazil at the turn of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, endorsed by the Republican governments in the post-abolition period in rural areas of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Agents inserted in the trajectory of the construction of this community had to face several obstacles to be alive and present. This article seeks to analyze resistance practices as a strategy of political action adopted by peasants in unfavorable situations in which they were inserted.
