The article approaches the IV Congress of National History. This academic meeting was promoted by Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro (Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute), in Rio de Janeiro, April, 1949, to celebrate the fourth centenarian of anniversary of the city of Salvador (Bahia) foundation and the General Government institution. The scientific event congregated one hundred and fifty searches, including twenty foreigners, sixteen of which integrated an official portuguese delegation sent by Antonio de Oliveira Salazar's government. It is intended to examine the Congress activities and its contribution to the national historiography.
