The Hispano Americano and Peru’s Propaganda in Panama during the War of the Pacific (1879-1881)

ABSTRACT

The article analyses the problem of Peruvian propaganda in Panama, which materialized in the Panamanian newspaper Hispano Americano between October 1879 and January 1881 during the War of the Pacific. The media was part of Peruvian diplomatic strategy and deployed a discourse and rhetoric aimed at achieving the support of the Colombian government to ensure the free transit of military supplies through the Isthmus and support the construction of a positive image of Perú in the international political space, mainly in the United States and Europe. The attempt to achieve these political goals was articulated around the nineteenth-century principles and imaginaries, complemented by warlike language and rhetoric, related to concepts such as Law, civilization, and barbarism, used as an argument and discussion journalistic tool.
