The ambivalence of gymnastic exhibitions during the civil-military dictatorship in Uruguay (1973- 1985)

Abstract: Gymnastics, in its modern condition, has constantly placed itself between the ethical and aesthetic concerns over the body’s care and molding. Great shows, which are typical of the gymnastics exhibitions, are a testimony of this, promoting, communicating and educating from a body model that represents the man-woman citizen in its time and space. The last civil- military dictatorship in Uruguay (1973- 1985) was a period of exaltation and promotion of these exhibitions all over the country. This paper deals with the ambivalence this state policy generated within the members of gymnastics teams, compelled to obey a state command but who had, on the other hand, chances to meet, create and be entertained in return.
