The National Textbook Commission and the evaluation of mathematics text books between 1938 and 1969

Abstract: This article analyzes the textbook policy established by the Decree-Law 1006/38, which created the National Textbook Commission and determined the conditions for production, importation and use of textbooks for all teaching subjects in the entire country, focusing on the evaluation of mathematics textbooks and the results of this work, materialized in the lists of approved books. Special attention is paid to the educator Euclides Roxo for his important contributions to the teaching of mathematics in Brazil. The pedagogical, technical and scientific aspects are the main factors responsible for the disapproval of mathematics textbooks during the evaluation process. Thus, for a book to be authorized, it could not contain failures involving these aspects.
