The American teachers that Sarmiento brought and those who came later: her work in Argentina (1869-1910)

Abstract:

In this article we will focus on the work developed by American teachers in Argentina. We will analyze the regulations that made their arrival possible and the location they were given; we will study the content of the reports written by some female directors; and the testimonies of their students and contemporaries. We will show that there was an important distance between the letter of the official documents and what happened in reality; we will propose that the reports prepared by the directors revealed that they had to deal with the same situations as their Argentine colleagues while their work had certain particularities; and we will reveal that the Argentines were struck by their physical appearance, the type of discipline they imposed, and a certain autonomy in the management of the schools.
