The present study aimed to identify the first schoolbooks printed in Bahia, since the installation of the press (1811), highlighting the Typography of Serva as responsible for printing and circulation of a significant part of these books, evidencing a growing demand. The article also analyzed the books as to form, content and purposes, verifying that, in this case, many of the manuals were conceived and produced as political tools, used to justify the maintenance of language, religion, culture and Portuguese customs in Brazil in the context after 1822e.
