Mariana Coelho and her feminist genesis: from the domain of the alphabet and writing to the craft of reading

Abstract:

The aim of this article is to show the relationship of Mariana Coelho (1857-1954) with the universe of reading and writing, as well as the meaning and symbology surrounding this practice expressed during the period in which she lived in Portugal, until the period in which it begins to live in Brazil. For that, it draws on some reflections by Roger Chartier and Robert Darnton, as well as Pierre Bourdieu and Jean-François Sirinelli, authors that allow us to understand the social, cultural and symbolic spaces in which Mariana Coelho transited. Thus, when dealing with the fundamental aspects of the trajectory of this character, the importance of this analysis is highlighted, as it reveals characteristics and specificities of a broader scenario.
