Abstract:
The present study aimed to identify the circulation of the manual Tratado pratico de gymnastica sueca, produced by L. G. Kumlien, in Brazil. For this, it was necessary an investigation of the author’s life and actions. Kumlien, Swedish, doctor-gymnastics, moved to Paris in 1895, where he promoted different movements in order to spread out the Swedish gymnastics, including writing manuals. These were used as an educational material in Brazil until the mid-30’s. It has circulated, was read and served as a guideline for building up a conception of body education. The study contributes for the understanding of the ways by which the Swedish gymnastics has entered the country, particularly through manuals. The manuals as well as Brazilian and French newspapers were the main references.
