Social Work Training in Portugal: an analysis of the constitution of the field

Abstract

Social work training has constituted the path of affirming its knowledge and knowledge production in the social sciences. The aim of this article is to provide a chronological summary of social work training in Portugal. Thus, the use of document analyses on the history of Portuguese social work, as well as the legislation that has regulated and contributed to the functioning of teaching in this area, were fundamental to this research, being then complemented with current data on the functioning of social work courses. The results show that progress has been made in scientific training, with an increase in the educational offer and in the production of doctoral theses, reinforcing the continuity and consolidation of the expansion of Social Work as an area of the social sciences.
