Celebrate here and there: comparative writing of school Brazil and Portugal (1890-1920)

Abstract:

This article proposes the comparative writing of the history of school holidays in Brazil and Portugal in a representative context of the consolidation of public and state educational systems in the two countries, from the turn of the nineteenth century to the twentieth. The analyses that make the writing were elaborated from the systematization of texts published in educational journals and pedagogical manuals. In this documentary corpus, we can see that the approximations related to the theme refer to the festivities that celebrate the school as part of the modernizing project of the Brazilian and Portuguese societies. In turn, the distances are related to the themes of the solemnities, such as the Portuguese charitable parties or the dates representing the national ‘heroes’ and important events in the political history of the countries.
