Abstract:
The historiography of education in Uruguay has not taken the importance of the contradictions in the process of constitution of the baccalaureate that was taught at the Universidad de la República in the 19th century. The lack of mention of military instruction that was included in the secondary education program in 1887 is outstanding in a time time when the Baccalaureate curriculum in Sciences and Arts was consolidated. Paradoxically the militaristic cycle was already in the final phase. The objective of this article is to analyze the arguments that justify this late inclusion of military training in university and teachers formation, based on a research that combines institutional and personal documentations.
