Abstract: The objective of this work was to understand the main presuppositions of civic education advocated in the work of Hygino Amanajás and its relation with the ideals of citizenship present in the educational project of the First Republic. In the development of the research we seek to identify the components of the ideal of citizenship in the period of the First Republic, based on the premises of the positivist ideology, recognizing the common ideas between the citizenship advocated in the First Republic and what we call didactic-civic prescriptions in the referred book.
