Women and writing at the Psychical Center of Caetité-BA (1905-1930)

Abstract

The article presents analyzes of the participation of women in the Centro Psychico de Caetité-BA, in the first decades of the 20th century, through written production. The aim is to contribute to increasing the visibility of women's activities in non-school training in a context in which the literate population was still quite restricted throughout the country. Through evidence found in meeting minutes, psychographed documents and the spiritist center's official newspaper, we identified the presence of women performing prominent roles, such as in the final transcription of the minutes, in psychographed writings, in journalistic writing and in sending letters and cards. The leading role of women belonging to the socioeconomic, political elite in roles equivalent to those held by men in this educational instance is evident.
