Night school ‘O Exemplo’: education and emancipation of workers in the post-abolition black press (Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul)

Abstract:

The article analyzes the night school project defended between 1902 and 1904 by O Exemplo to identify strategies to implement the political project of that black newspaper and articulations between education and emancipation in the construction of political struggles in the post-abolition. Specifically, the article focused on criticism of the republican project that was being implemented, the connections between black and working-class agendas, afro-diasporic dialogues, and female participation. It uses the perspective of social history and O Exemplo is the main source of analysis. The night school did not materialize, but its project and discussion record the agency of black workers in the construction of the popular education and its historical valorization in the projects of black emancipation.
