Abstract:
It analyzes the Maranhão liceist student press movement of the first republican decade (1889-1900), as a source and object of study simultaneously. For this purpose he describes the aspects related to the materiality of the newspapers: O Século (1889), O Ensaio (1890), A Eschola (1891), O Porvir (1895), O Ideal (1898), and A Actualidade (1900) the main themes debated by them. The theoretical-methodological approach is based on the assumptions of Cultural History. It concludes that the lyricist press played a prominent role in Maranhão society and in the process of reinvigoration of ‘Brazilian Athens’, acting mainly as a vehicle for legitimizing intellectual practices.
