Iron-deficiency anemia is a highly prevalent nutritional disorder in the whole world. The two most common causes of anemia in pregnancy and in the puerperium are iron deficiency and acute blood loss. Pregnancy is associated with physiological changes that may complicate the diagnosis of hematologic diseases. The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief overview of iron deficiency in pregnancy, adverse maternal-fetal consequences, screening and clinical management of anemia during pregnancy.
