Writing to Learn: Pedagogical Device Proposal for the Elementary School – Final Years

Abstract:

This paper considers the learning difficulties in the specific context of the elementary school – final years (6th to 9th grade), especially in public schools. These difficulties result from the new social and didactic organization, the relationship with expert teachers, and new homework’s demanded, typical of this period when compared to early years. To mediate these difficulties, we propose the Writing to Learn device whose purpose is to systematically explore the epistemic function of writing. The device would be integrated as a curricular component to the diversified part of the grade curriculum.
