This article aims at investigating the field of Applied Linguistics as an area which produces knowledge and which has been under many changes. These changes can be represented by the different voices of its research over the past years. Thus, this study analyzes the historical path of Applied Linguistics within the range of the Brazilian Congresses of Applied Linguistics, trying to understand the different meanings of the social voices of the scientific discourse on this field. The analyses of the evolution of these areas and subareas of study in such aforementioned congresses point towards the diversity and richness of the path of this researching field which constitute its own and unique identity.
