The Use of Interjections in Mad Men Fansubs in English and Portuguese: A Corpus Linguistics Perspective

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to analyze the use of interjections in the English and Portuguese fansubs of the seven seasons of Mad Men, to verify if there is some degree of standardization throughout the seasons, both in the fansubs of the same language and across the two languages. To that end a Corpus Linguistics framework was used, and the Mad Men corpus was analyzed with AntConc 3.5.8. The results show that the English fansubs have about four and a half times more interjections and express more negative feelings than the Portuguese fansubs. Despite these differences, the fansubs in both languages show some degree of standardization in the use of different interjections throughout the seasons, suggesting that the teams that elaborate the subtitles have a good organizational structure regardless of their non-professional status.
