The Teaching/Learning of English within Incarceration: The Effect of Suspension

ABSTRACT:

This paper aims at analyzing the formation of the Effect of Suspension which stagnates the actions, the discursive positions and the relationships within the confusing space of the teaching-learning of English in a juvenile detention center. In order to do so, excerpts from an English class and from some participants’ interviews are analyzed. The study is carried out under the discourse analysis research method and a structural mapping of the lesson. The analysis points out an intriguing conflict between meanings related to the educational issues and meanings related to the incarceration issues, outlining a confusing space for the English teaching-learning from which emerges the Effect of Suspension.
