Krashen (1982)
A hipótese do filtro afetivo de Krashen (1982 apud Mitchell; Myles; Marsden, 2013, p. 45) registra a relação entre variáveis afetivas e o processo de aquisição de L2, postulando que os tipos de aprendizes variam de acordo com a força ou nível de seus filtros afetivos.
Gardner e MacIntyre (1993)
Gardner e MacIntyre (1993 apud Mastrella-de-Andrade, 2011 , p. 21) caracterizam a ansiedade pela presença de medo ou apreensão que ocorre quando o aluno precisa falar na LE ou L2.

Sentimentos e emoções em contexto de aprendizagem são o resultado de avaliações de determinadas situações que os aprendizes fazem enquanto estão aprendendo.

Gardner e Lambert ( 1972 )
Os autores estabeleceram dois tipos de motivação: a motivação instrumental (ou seja, aprender a língua para um objetivo imediato ou prático) e a motivação integrativa (ou seja, o desejo de aprender a língua para crescimento pessoal e enriquecimento cultural através do contato com falantes da outra língua, a LE.)
Gardner (1985)
Gardner (1985, p. 10 apud DÖRNYEI 1998 , p. 122) define a motivação para L2 como o ponto até o qual um indivíduo trabalha ou se esforça para aprender a língua devido a uma vontade de fazê-lo e à satisfação experimentada nesta atividade.
Clément et al. (1994)
Clément et al (1994), estabeleceu a existência de um construto de motivação tripartido entre os aprendizes participantes de sua pesquisa (integratividade, autoconfiança linguística e avaliação do ambiente de sala de aula).
Dörnyei ( 1994 )
Dörnyei ( 1994 , p. 279) propõe um esquema de componentes motivacionais para o aprendizado de LE, o qual se divide em três níveis: 1) o nível da língua, ou seja, está relacionado a diversos aspectos da LE, como cultura, a comunidade em que é falada e as possibilidades reais de utilização da língua em um contexto real; 2) o nível do aprendiz, ao qual integram-se afetividade e cognição. Neste nível estão a busca por realização ou sucesso e a autoconfiança; 3) o nível da situação de aprendizagem, formado por razões internas e externas e condições de motivação que envolvem três áreas: o curso, o professor e o grupo.
Dörnyei ( 1998 )
Dörnyei ( 1998 ) defende que a motivação fornece o primeiro ímpeto que conduz alguém à aprendizagem de uma segunda língua e ela mesma é a força que fará o aprendiz permanecer aprendendo durante o longo processo de aprendizagem. Dörnyei ( 1998 , p. 118) afirma que “[...] na atual psicologia educacional, além dos fatores ambientais e cognitivos normalmente associados à aprendizagem, a motivação em LE também contém dimensões sociais e de personalidade”. Motivação, definida por Dörnyei ( 1998 , p. 122), refere-se a um tipo de motor mental central ou centro de energia que inclui esforço, desejo (cognição) e a satisfação que a tarefa traz (afeto/ emoção). Dörnyei defende que esses componentes atuam em conjunto e que o indivíduo verdadeiramente motivado demonstra possuir esses três aspectos de motivação. Ele acredita que a junção dos três fará o indivíduo alcançar o objetivo esperado na língua-alvo.
Michelon ( 2003 )
A aprendizagem da L2 acontece em contextos formais e informais, concomitantemente, enquanto que a aprendizagem da LE está mais estreitamente relacionada a contextos formais. Assim, pode-se pressupor que atitudes, interesses e valores sejam diferentes em cada contexto e, com isso, a motivação para a aprendizagem da LE e a motivação para a aprendizagem da L2 se revestem de características diferentes, abrangendo variáveis que são particulares a cada uma delas. (Michelon, 2003 , p. 82).
Lightbown e Spada (2013)
Lightbown e Spada (2013, p. 87) afirmam que a motivação para a aprendizagem de uma segunda língua é um fenômeno complexo e que há dois fatores que a definem: 1) necessidades comunicativas do aprendiz e 2) atitude do aprendiz em relação à comunidade de LE.
Norton (2016)
Norton estabeleceu o conceito de investimento ( investment ), o qual sinaliza a relação constituída sócio e historicamente entre os aprendizes e a língua-alvo e, algumas vezes, o seu desejo ambivalente de aprendê-la e de colocá-la em prática. A autora defende que, se o aprendiz “investe” na língua-alvo, ele o faz porque entende que irá adquirir uma ampla variedade de recursos simbólicos (língua, educação, amizades) e recursos materiais (bens, dinheiro) os quais aumentarão o valor de seu capital cultural e poder social. (Norton, 2016, p. 5).
