Torto Arado and crooked world: colonialitiesdecolonialities problematized in critical linguistic education

Abstract

The main aim of this paper is to problematize colonialitiesdecolonialities narrated in Torto Arado, a novel written by Itamar Vieira Junior, which are related to the work we develop in critical language education at the universities where we work. Colonialitiesdecolonialities constitute the lives of the main characters Bibiana and Belonísia, two sisters born into a family of Black enslaved descendants who work on a farm in Bahia. We discuss how they confront colonialities by means of two paths: Bibiana becomes a teacher and Belonísia becomes a “woman of the land”. Based on the experiences of the two sisters, as well as on the principles we have adopted to promote a decolonial and critical linguistic education, we advocate for a language education that brings us closer to our stories, connects us with nature and makes us reflect on the deep meaning of what we are doing on/with the planet.
