Abstract:
This study aims to describe and compare five versions of one Yoruba written narrative – ìtàn – on which an important religious ceremony in Bahia’s candomblé is based. Stemming from narrative theory, linguistic anthropology, and texts from high candomblé priestess, the study has demonstrated that the narrative versions have similarities but also differences concerning core narrative elements, such as events, plot, characters, context, description and, mostly important, purposes. The study has also considered these mythical narratives as cultural artifacts due to their importance as sources that justify how traditional ceremonies in Bahia’s candomblé are conducted. In the end, the study has emphasized the fact that besides being an element for scientific scrutiny, the mythical narratives are especially seen by candomblé devotees as the basis for their rites and beliefs.
