Carmen, from stereotype to challenge: The character beyond the work of Prosper Mérimée

ABSTRACT

This article aims to discuss the possibility of subverting the stereotypes attributed to women through the analysis of the representation of the character Carmen between the source text and the cinematographic adaptations inspired by Mérimée’s narrative and/or by Bizet’s opera in order to understand the mechanisms used for the construction of the character from Hutcheon’s A theory of adaptation as well as other authors.
