Corina Coaraci: chronicles of the 19th century to be read in the 21st century

ABSTRACT

Corina Coaraci (United States, 4/18/1859 - 3/23/1892) was a journalist, daughter of American Mary Frances Lawe and Brazilian journalist Carlos Francisco Alberto de Vivaldi. At the invitation of José do Patrocínio, she joined the editorial staff of Cidade do Rio, where she began writing the weekly column “A Esmo”. She has collaborated in periodicals such as: Illustração Brazil, South American Mail, Illustração Popular, Folha Nova, Gazetinha, The New York Herald, Cidade do Rio, Correio do Povo, O Paiz. Her literary activity was not limited to simple comments or news of faits divers. In Cidade do Rio, the columnist transits through several themes, such as, robberies, murders, infanticides, literary and political news. Another important issue that we highlight is the position of women as a social being. She advocated the legal expansion of women's civil and political rights, equating their rights with those of men. Although she has not published any books of her own, Corina Coaracy is a significant name in our literature. We chose as corpus the period from July 5th to September 27th, 1890, of the aforementioned column for the reflections that constitute this article. Its aim is to publicize her work, to make it known so that researchers have access to her production in order to know what women wrote and published in the 19th century.
