Pubic pain in the soccer player

Pubic pain has become a common problem in soccer, worrying athletes, trainers, orthopedists, and physical therapists. The pubic joint is able to absorb some of both descending and ascending forces that are applied to the body and its behavior depends directly on sacroiliac movements. It makes this joint very important, putting it some times in stressful situations. Because pubic pain demands a long and difficult treatment, the knowledge of its pathophysiology becomes essential. Although, there still is no consensus among authors, many mechanisms have been suggested to explain its development. The purpose of this article is to discuss these possible mechanisms trying to relate them with the authors' experience with Brazilian professional soccer players, showing keys for its prevention and treatment. These includes good flexibility of muscles related to the pubic bone, mobilization of the sacroiliac joint, correction of muscle imbalances, proper shoes and field condition.
