Aging in the healthy subject is related to many physical and psychological changes that interfere with motor skills, contributing to inactivity, development of specific pathologies, causing a negative effect on daily activities. Therefore, physical activity is of most importance for the elderly, necessary not only to prevent disorders, but also to rehabilitate motor skills, leading to a healthier life and higher quality of life. However, some precautions should be taken when prescribing physical activity for the elderly, so that is can be safe and pleasant. The most adequate exercises for the elderly are walking, cycling, swimming and water exercising. The number of elderly people attending water exercise classes has recently increased. This type of exercise improves aerobic power, muscle strength, flexibility, and specific skills, such as balance and motor coordination. Moreover, water exercise provides a relaxing environment and social contact, acting against stress, depression, and helps building a positive self-image. One must, therefore, observe the particularities of water exercise in order to take advantage of the benefits it may provide to the elderly.
