In 1997 FIMS published a position statement about: "AIDS and Sports", the translation of which was published in the Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte. However, this publication did not mention the availability of chemoprophylaxis after exposure to HIV, an established practice with great importance to the sports medicine physician. The purpose of this article is to revise the literature concerning this subject, discuss ethical issues, risk/benefit ratios and when to indicate chemoprophylaxis after HIV exposure, emphasizing the possibilities of transmission during sports competitions. In addition, the drugs most often used and its recommended doses are also presented.
