Regular physical activity: a population-based study in North Minas Gerais, Brazil

INTRODUCTION:

The regular practice of physical activity (RPAP) is fundamental in any age and has been considered a means of preserving and improving the health and quality of life of the human being. Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.

OBJECTIVE:

To determine the prevalence and factors associated with RPAP in adolescents, adults and elderly.

METHODS:

Cross sectional study population-based, held in the north of State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Cluster sampling was performed in multiple stages, and data were collected through a questionnaire on home visits. RPAP was assessed by the question "How often do you practice physical activity?". Those who responded "always" or "often" were considered active. Sociodemographic, behavioral and general health characteristics were evaluated. The chi-square test and the Poisson regression analysis were used with robust adjustment for variances.

RESULTS:

Among adolescents, 45.2% were considered active. The RPAP among adolescents was significantly associated with younger age, male gender, those who were studying, did not smoke and with higher levels of quality of life/mental mastering. Among adults, 20.7% were considered active. The RPAP among adults was significantly associated with male gender, higher education and higher quality of life related to mental aspects. Among elderly, 19.1% were considered active. The RPAP among the elderly showed a significantly associated with self-reported skin color white, higher education, have a job and higher level of quality of life (mental aspect).

CONCLUSION:

We observed a decrease level of physical activity with increasing chronological age. The implementation of public policies that encourage regular physical activity in the population subgroups most affected by inactivity are recommended: adults and the elderly, especially women and those with lower socioeconomic status.
