Analysis of Atmospheric Variables Observed with High Spatiotemporal Resolution During 30 Days in the Mesoregion of Santa Catarina Island

Abstract

Meteorological campaigns are important because they show characteristics of the atmosphere which normally are not observed. In July and August, 2013 an unprecedented meteorological campaign with high temporal resolution was conduct at the Mesoregion of Santa Catarina Island (MSCI). The experiment of 30 days consisted of measuring standard meteorological variables at 1-min sampling rate at four strategic places of MSCI. This paper shows some aspects of both micro and meso scales. For a minutely exploration of the variables, it was studied one case of sudden change of wind direction and two cases of extreme temperatures. The results showed higher wind speeds in both west and south sectors, and lower temperatures in the north sector of the MSCI. Temperature variation each minute is mainly controlled by both turbulence and air masses which are transported over the observation point. In addition, it was found that the temporal variability of both temperature and specific humidity presents similar behavior at entire MSCI. It occurs from the time that the local atmospheric forcings with temporal scale from 1 to 3 h becomes inconsiderable.
