Ischemic optic neuropathy and aging: systematic review and meta-analysis

ABSTRACT

Objective:

This systematic review aimed to investigate the prevalence and incidence of optic neuropathy in older adults.

Methods:

A search was conducted in the following databases: Medline/Pubmed, Embase, Scielo, and BVS, and data extraction for this review encompassed the period up until March 2023, using MeSH terms and Boolean operators. The selected search strategy and methods were registered in the PROSPERO database (#CRD42023403901).

Results:

Twelve articles were included for analysis, comprising four case-control studies and seven cohort studies. The results of this meta-analysis showed increased prevalence and incidence rates of ischemic optic neuropathy among patients aged 60 years or older compared to patients aged 40-59.

Conclusion:

It can be concluded that the studies demonstrated an increased incidence and prevalence of ischemic optic neuropathy in older patients and that individuals affected by optic nerve ischemia were more frequently carriers of systemic arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemias.
