Strabismus after botulinum toxin treatment for aesthetic reasons

Over the last decades, botulinum toxin has been used therapeutically in innumerable diseases. The type A toxin was first approved in 1989 for treating strabismus, blepharospasm and hemifacial spasms in patients over the age of 12. It was observed that in adult patients undergoing treatment for blepharospasm with botulinum toxin, na additional effect of wrinkle reduction appeared, giving rise to studies regarding the cosmetic use of the toxin. Recently, type A botulinum toxin has been approved for aesthetic purposes. This study reports the emergence of a clinical case of strabismus after the application of botulinum toxin on the face for cosmetic reasons.
